Live opera: “Iolanta / The Nutcracker” on 17 March

This exceptional programme combines all the talents of the Paris Opera and offers opera and ballet in one performance: Tchaikovsky originally wanted them to be represented together. However, since its debut at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1892, they have been represented separately. For this opera, the composer was inspired by the work of Danish playwright Henrik Hertz, which tells the romantic story of Iolanta, the blind daughter of King René. Protected by her father in his Provençal castle, the princess finally recovers her sight before marrying the gallant knight Vaudémont. The Nutcracker is based on a story by Hoffmann adapted by Alexandre Dumas. This ” fairytale ballet ” chronicles the adventures of young Clara on Christmas Eve, during which, the Nutcracker takes her to a magical world. In collaboration with the stage director Dmitri Tcherniakov and director Alain Altinoglu, five choreographers – Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Edouard Lock, Benjamin Millepied, Arthur Pita and Liam Scarlett-Will, make this a ballet a must see within the calendar of classical performances. Iolanta’s role will be played by Sonya Yoncheva and Etoiles, Premiers Danseurs and Cueropo de Baile will perform The Nutcracker. Like a two-sided mirror that reflects the dreams of a composer who sought refuge in the realms of the imaginary, the Paris Opera is reviving them both just as the composer had it in mind. Alain Altinoglu conducts and Dmitri Tcherniakov stages this production that symbolizes the link between opera and ballet.
